Open Lecture: Kozek Hörlonski

On Monday the 4th of November at 12:30pm an open lecture by the artist duo Kozek Hörlonski will be held at the Iceland University of the Arts, Laugarnesvegur 91.

Performance as a Transmedial Field

Within their lecture Peter Kozek and Thomas Hörl will give an insight in their own long time experience in performance art and related artistic disciplines by showing examples of their solo work and collaborative projects realized together. They’ll also talk about their practical method of teaching as assistant professors.

Authenticity – in the sense of unmistakeability an immediacy – seems to me to be connected within an approach that uses the personality as a reliable and inexhaustible source of narrative.

Alongside a presentation of both their own works and student’s projects Peter Kozek who is teaching „performance and space“ in the department of Transmedia Art at the University of applied arts in Vienna since 2006 is giving a performance workshop, light on, light off!, a compact method and possibility to collect performative material within a simple setting.

Students with or without experience in that specific field are welcome!

Peter Kozek, born 1972 in Baden, Austria, studied comprehensive media art from 1998 to 2002 at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and from 1993 to 1995 classical singing with Annet Zaïre in Vienna, Austria. He teaches as an assistant professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in the department of Transmedia Art, Univ. Prof. Brigitte Kowanz.

He works in performance and installation since 1993, and since 2003 also in collaboration with Thomas Hörl as kozek hörlonski. Together they have developed exhibitions, installations, performances and interventions in public space in Austria and internationally. Conceived as mobile, performative sculptures, their works combine categories and media formats with opposing connotations to define them in terms of relationality. Contrasting elements intermix and polarized terminologies are subverted, while objects and viewers fuse in performative spatial images. The syncretic approach of poetic elements, of images in time and space, mobilizes a series of motives and cross-references. As a curator, Peter Kozek has realized numerous exhibitions and performance events and also has produced several artistic publications both with Thomas Hörl/kozek hörlonski and in the context of the department of Transmedia Art.

Thomas Hörl is a visual artist. He works solo and as well in cooperation and is looking for stimuli for his artistic work in regional myths and narrations and transforms existing aspects of these traditions, like disguise, masks and processions, in various medial ways. His artistic work includes performance, video works, installation, object, collage and staged photography.

Hörl is born 1975 in Hallein, Austria. Hörl attended a school for sculptor and studied visual art in Vienna, Reykjavík and Tokyo. He took part in Artist-in-Residence-programs in London, Tirana, Paris, Vilnius, Tallinn, Warsaw, Frankfurt am Main, Tokyo and Reykjavík. 2003 he founded with Peter Kozek the artists-group kozek hörlonski. Thomas received grants and awards such as the annual scholarship from Land Salzburg, outstanding artist award from the state of Austria (kozek hörlonski), Theodor Körner Preis, H13 Lower Austria Award for Performance (kozek hörlonski) and the state grant of Austria for visual art and was teaching at the University of Art and Design (Kunstuniversität Linz) from 2015-2018.
