The building is designed with Flatey’s ecosystem in mind, its purpose being to provide travelers with sustenence and rest. An intergrated part of nature, it becomes bart of the biological cycle. For example, the building’s mussel cutivation provides nutrients to feed plants such as kelp. Increasing ocean biodiversity increases the amount of food available for fish and fowl. Birds live in the walls and on the roofs, and can be used as a food source. Kelp processing facilities allow production of silverware, plates, et al. Finally, waste is used to heat the building.
